Project summary
This Evanston home was upgraded from hail-damaged vinyl siding to a more durable James Hardie exterior. The homeowner wanted improved resistance to future exterior damage without completely changing the familiar colour palette and overall character of the house. The new design uses horizontal Hardie siding across the main elevations, with Hardie shingle accents retained on the upper front sections. Contrasting battens around the windows, doors, corners and architectural transitions preserve the layered appearance of the original exterior while providing a longer-lasting envelope finish.
• Removed and disposed of the existing vinyl siding from the house and detached garage • Reviewed the exposed exterior sheathing before beginning the new installation • Installed new building wrap and sealed the wall assemblies as part of the exterior envelope preparation • Installed James Hardie lap siding with a similar warm, neutral appearance to the original exterior • Installed Hardie shingle accents across the upper front elevation to retain the home’s original architectural character • Installed new Hardie battens around windows, doors, corners, gables and exterior transitions • Added metal flashing at horizontal battens, openings and siding-to-roof connections • Reworked exterior fixture and utility penetrations to suit the new fiber cement siding system • Completed the James Hardie siding installation on both the house and detached garage
