Before talking about panel count, we want to know whether the roof is a sensible place to install a long-term solar system. The condition of the shingles, roof age, previous repairs, valleys, penetrations, flashing, pitch and usable roof planes all affect the plan.

If the roof is nearing replacement, doing the reroof first is usually cleaner than installing solar now and paying to remove and reinstall the array a few years later. If the roof is still serviceable, the focus shifts to correcting any maintenance items before the mounting system goes on.

What we look at before a solar layout is accepted

Roof condition

Shingle condition, previous repairs, flashing, roof deck concerns and remaining service life need to support the project before panels cover those areas.

Usable roof area

Valleys, plumbing vents, exhausts, chimneys, skylights, roof edges and changes in pitch all reduce or reshape the areas available for modules.

Orientation and shading

South-facing roof planes are not the only useful areas. East and west exposures can also contribute depending on the property, shade and total layout.

Electrical demand

The home's actual electricity use matters because a physically large roof-fit array is not automatically the right system size for the household.

Mounting and roof penetrations deserve roofing attention

Solar racking has to connect securely to the structure below the roofing. That means the mounting locations, attachment points and flashing details cannot be treated as an afterthought.

On an asphalt roof, we pay attention to how the mounting system interfaces with shingles, underlayment and existing roof details so water can continue to drain normally around the array.

The same logic matters years later if roof work is needed around an existing system. Panels, rails and electrical equipment change how the roofer accesses the roof, which is another reason the initial sequence matters.

Electrical planning is part of the project

The roof is only half of a rooftop solar installation. The electrical scope can include modules, inverter equipment, shutdown and protection equipment, wiring, monitoring, connection to the home's electrical distribution and the required permit and utility interconnection steps.

Some homes can accept the planned system with relatively little electrical change. Others may need additional work depending on the existing service, panel capacity, equipment location and proposed system size.

What Calgary weather changes about the conversation

A Calgary rooftop solar system has to live through the same hail, wind, snow, strong sun and rapid temperature swings as the roof underneath it. We want the roofing assembly and solar equipment choices considered with that exposure in mind.

Snow can temporarily cover panels and reduce production, while roof pitch and panel placement affect where snow may slide. Entries, decks, sidewalks and lower roof sections below an array are worth considering during layout rather than after installation.

Ventilation still matters after solar goes on

Solar does not replace the need for a properly ventilated attic. Intake ventilation at the soffit and exhaust ventilation higher on the roof still need to work as a system.

We do not want a panel layout that unnecessarily blocks important roof components or makes future ventilation work difficult. If ventilation changes are required, the cleanest time to deal with them is before the final solar array is installed.

Roof replacement before solar

If the roof is already due for replacement, completing the roofing first gives us access to the roof deck and allows the new roofing system to be installed without working around an existing array.

A reroof can include tear-off, deck review, underlayment, ice protection, new shingles, valley details, edge metal, flashings and ventilation changes where required. Once that work is complete, the solar installer is mounting to a known roof condition instead of an aging system with uncertain remaining life.

If the roof is not due for replacement, we would rather say that and deal only with the maintenance or detail work that is actually needed.
